Sorry I took so long to respond.
In addition to what everyone else has said, I would recommend:
Braindead (US title: Dead Alive) - Before Peter Jackson became a famous Hollywood director with his adaption of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, he made lower budget horror movies, and this is my favorite one. It's REALLY gory, but also quite funny, so it isn't hard to watch. And the main character is a like-able nerd who just can't seem to get away from his overbearing mother, even after her death. On top of that, he has to fight off an outbreak of hungry zombies and try to save the hottie who thinks he is the man that she is destined to meet. It 's my kind of movie. ;D Make sure that you get the unrated version, the R rated version is a travesty. Anything directed by David Cronenberg, he has the most consistently original horror movies. All of them are worth seeing, but my favorites are probably The Brood, Videodrome, and the remake of The Fly.
Dario Argento has already been mentioned. I like everything up through Opera, after that it is hit or miss for me. My favorite is probably Suspiria.
George Romero has also been mentioned for his Dead series. A couple of his other features are favorites of mine: Martin and Creepshow.

For truly sick and disturbing get the Gunea Pig series specially the Flower of Flesh and Blood one... Necromantik 1 & 2 Premutos For creepy and bizzare I recommend Japanese horror... Ringu 1 & 2 Uzumaki Dead Waters The Grudge etc... awesome, someone eles who A) has seem Uzumaki and B) who got it enough to recommend it..you rock i throughly enjoy asian horror and not too many seem to around here...lol Yep been a long time fan of all things asian... I also recommend Tetsuo Iron Man for the truly bizzare... As for Uzumaki that ended too soon I wanted it to go on for a while longer but I now see why it ended the way it did because even now after seeing it a month ago it still lingers to haunt me lol Keith mentioned cronenburg so I must mention one of my favorites of his... eXistanZ... Not your typical horror... In fact I dont think its realy horror it pretty much stands by itself like a lynch film...
